The Importance of Proper Maintenance and Pre-Use Checks

Two construction companies have been fined a total of £60,000 following the death of a worker who fell nearly 8 meters from a cherry picker on a dual carriage way in Liverpool. The incident was caused by the cherry pickers lifting arm collapsing.
The HSE investigation found inadequaces in both the companies systems for checking and maintaining the cherry picker, both when it was delivered and throughout its hire period.
This highlights the importance of companies responsibilities regarding not only their own equipment but also any hired machinery. Are you having your equipment regularly serviced and maintained? Do you a have system for carrying out pre-shift checks and do you keep records? Does your equipment have a current Thorough Examination certificate?
